About WM-Net Zero
WM-Net Zero is funded by an award from the Wellcome Trust for advancing climate mitigation policy solutions with health co-benefits in G7 countries. This initiative aims to bring together research organizations and policy bodies with a clear opportunity to influence climate mitigation policies with substantial health impacts. Successful projects will generate evidence to support policymakers in advancing transformative, health-centered changes in the food systems, transport, energy, or housing sectors.
WM-Net Zero aims to transform regional net-zero policies by focusing on health and wellbeing. We’re adopting a health-centred approach to create better, smarter solutions for our community. Here’s what we aim to achieve:
- Map the System: We’re developing comprehensive system maps for the transport, housing, and energy sectors.
- Climate-Health Toolkit: Our new toolkit will help evaluate the health benefits of net-zero policies.
- Evidence-Based Policies: We are generating solid evidence to shape and implement effective net-zero policies in the West Midlands.
- Co-Production: By working together with citizens and different stakeholders, we aim to create impactful net-zero policies not just locally, but across the UK and other G7 countries.
- Ongoing Research and Behaviour Change: We’re committed to informing continuous research and encouraging both policy uptake and positive behaviour changes.
Our innovative Climate-LAT toolkit will allow policymakers to assess the health and economic impacts of various net-zero scenarios. This insight will enable them to design policies that improve air quality and health while avoiding unintended consequences.
The WM-Net Zero team draws on the University of Birmingham’s internationally leading research expertise in air pollution science and its health and economic impacts.
