We are pleased to share the launch of WM-Adapt, a new £2 million project funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), co-led by WM-Net Zero Co-Investigator Dr Emma Ferranti. This initiative, distinct from WM-Net Zero, focuses on strengthening climate adaptation efforts across the West Midlands by integrating community perspectives, enhancing climate modelling, and fostering collaboration among regional stakeholders.
Building on the success of the Climate Risk and Vulnerability Assessment (CRVA) co-developed with Birmingham City Council, WM-Adapt will provide a robust framework for climate adaptation that can be applied across the UK. The project will specifically address surface water flooding and urban heat islands, two key climate risks increasingly affecting the region.
Dr. Ferranti emphasizes the importance of this initiative:
“WM-Adapt represents a major step forward in our efforts to build climate resilience in the West Midlands. By integrating community perspectives, advancing climate modeling, and strengthening partnerships, we aim to create a framework that enhances the region’s ability to adapt to climate challenges.”
This project further reinforces the University of Birmingham’s leadership in climate research and its commitment to working with regional partners to tackle climate change.
While WM-Net Zero focuses on the transition to net zero, WM-Adapt will complement this work by ensuring that climate adaptation remains a central priority in regional policymaking and urban planning.
