WM-Net Zero team has released a new report on air quality simulations across the West Midlands for 2024, providing a detailed, street-level picture of pollution across the region. Using an advanced modelling approach that combines emissions, weather data, and urban characteristics, the study maps concentrations of key pollutants including nitrogen dioxide, fine particulate matter, and ozone. The results show that pollution remains strongly linked to traffic, with the highest levels concentrated along major roads and in urban centres.
While the findings indicate progress towards statutory air quality targets, they also highlight that pollution levels—particularly fine particles—still exceed the more stringent World Health Organization guidelines in many areas. This reinforces the need for continued action on road traffic emissions and wider sources of pollution. The report provides important evidence to support local decision-making, helping policymakers better understand exposure patterns and design more effective strategies to protect public health across the region
