Six Years of the Clean Air Programme: Building a Lasting Research and Policy Legacy

The UKRI and Met Office Clean Air Programme has come to a close after six years of advancing interdisciplinary research and collaboration on air pollution. Launched in 2018 with £42.5 million in funding, the programme brought together researchers, policymakers, industry, and communities to address air quality challenges across the UK. Through a combination of research projects, networks, and knowledge exchange activities, it helped bridge the gap between science and policy, supporting more informed decision-making and practical solutions.

A key achievement of the programme has been the creation of a new interdisciplinary clean air community, connecting expertise across atmospheric science, health, and social research. Its legacy continues through new initiatives, including major research hubs and policy developments, as well as a stronger emphasis on emerging areas such as indoor air quality. As the programme concludes, it leaves behind not only evidence and tools, but also a more connected and collaborative landscape to support ongoing action on air pollution and public health.
