Exploring the Co-Benefits of Electric Buses: Air Quality and Noise in Focus

As part of Noise Action Week 2026, an upcoming webinar will explore how transport policies—particularly the shift to electric buses—can deliver measurable improvements in both air quality and noise reduction. Drawing on a case study from Oxford, the session will highlight how the rollout of 159 electric buses led to significant reductions in roadside nitrogen dioxide levels, alongside noticeable decreases in urban noise. These findings demonstrate how coordinated local and national action can deliver multiple environmental and public health benefits.

The webinar will featured Dr Suzanne Bartington, WM-Net Zero Co-Lead, alongside experts from the University of Oxford and the University of Birmingham.

The discussion aims to emphasised the importance of evaluating transport interventions beyond emissions alone, considering wider impacts on urban environments and health. The insights expect to provide valuable guidance for policymakers and practitioners seeking to design integrated approaches that address air pollution, noise, and broader sustainability goals.
