New Case Study Reveals the Health Impact of Air Pollution Across the West Midlands

A new case study, with contributions from WM-Net Zero members, introduces the Air Quality Lifecourse Assessment Tool, designed to help local authorities understand how air pollution affects health across the West Midlands. Using detailed local data, the tool estimates the number of illnesses, deaths, and healthcare costs linked to air pollution, as well as the potential benefits of cleaner air. The findings highlight the scale of the challenge, showing that air pollution contributes to thousands of health conditions and deaths each year, particularly in more deprived areas.

The tool also demonstrates the potential for change. If pollution levels were reduced to meet international health guidelines, thousands of cases of asthma, heart disease, stroke, and lung cancer could be prevented over time, alongside significant savings for the NHS. By making these impacts visible at a local level, the tool provides practical evidence to support better planning, investment, and policy decisions aimed at improving air quality and reducing health inequalities.
